Sustainable Meeting in Atlantic City

We are committed to maintaining the natural resources that make our destination so beloved and unique. Planners, convention delegates and visitors alike will receive one-of-a-kind experiences that will enhance their visit while helping protect the natural environment.

Ocean Wind Offshore Wind Farm

  • The first offshore wind project in New Jersey delivering 1,100 MW of clean, reliable energy.
  • Located 15 miles off the coast of southern New Jersey and creating enough electricity to power 500,000 homes.
  • Ørsted with the support of PSE&G, is proud to present New Jersey’s first utility-scale offshore wind farm, Ocean Wind.
  • This wind farm will provide clean, and reliable energy, significant capital investment and will supply more than 3.2 million New Jersey homes with offshore wind power by 2035. The project will utilize the GE Haliade-X 12 MW turbine, which is the most powerful turbine on the market today.

Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm

  • Located at our Wastewater Treatment Plant in Atlantic City, NJ, the Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm consists of five, 380-foot turbines capable of producing a combined 7.5 megawatts of power, enough energy to power approximately 2,500 homes.
  • The power produced, in conjunction with our solar energy project, is used to operate the wastewater treatment plant, with any excess energy provided to the main power grid.
  • Opened in December 2005, the wind farm is the first in the state. As an eastern, urban, coastal, industrial, onshore, multi-turbine wind farm, it is one that is unique to the world.

Solar Project

  • A 500-kilowatt solar electric project comprised of 2,700 solar panels helps power our Wastewater Treatment Plant in Atlantic City, NJ.
  • Built in 2005, the system is estimated to produce more than 600,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, enough to power approximately 60 homes. Solar panels are located on the ground, roof tops and on a canopy over the employee parking lot at the plant.
  • The power produced, in conjunction with the Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm, is used to operate the wastewater treatment plant, with any excess energy provided to the main power grid.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

  • In October 2010, the first compressed natural gas station in South Jersey was built and operated by Clean Energy Fuels.
  • Currently, more than 50% of the entire fleet and more than 85% of the collection vehicles run on CNG. They are in the process of converting the entire fleet from biodiesel to CNG.

Atlantic City Jitney (compressed natural gas fuel)

  • In 2009, the New Jersey Clean Cities Coalition was one of 25 recipients to receive funding from the EERE Clean Cities’ Alternative Fuel and Advanced Technology Vehicles Pilot Program.
  • Approximately $15 million in funding allowed the city to purchase nearly 300 compressed natural gas vehicles, including 190 Atlantic City Jitneys.
  • The jitneys, minibuses run by owner-operators, have been Atlantic City’s main form of public transportation since 1915.

Marina Thermal Facility

  • Operating since 2003 and expanded the facility to support the growth of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa complex and surrounding area. Marina Energy, as owner, and DCO Energy, as the Developer and Operator, developed and financed the expansion of the off-site Central Utility Plant. This energy project emphasizes the long-term vision and capabilities of the centralized heating and cooling systems that have been instituted for the Renaissance Pointe area of Atlantic City.
  • The Marina Thermal Facility added 5,200 tons of chilling capacity along with the associated required system equipment to support the additional capacity such as cooling towers, pumps, and system controls.
  • The project also includes the addition of new energy transfer stations for hot and cold water and metering stations to monitor the delivery of the energy products.
  • The plant is designed to have the ultimate capacity of 25,000 tons of cooling, 350,000BTU of high temperature hot water production, and 8 MW of emergency power.

Sustainable (Green) Efforts at the Atlantic City Convention Center

  • The Atlantic City Convention Center is committed to preserving its unique seaside environment while providing a clean, safe, healthy atmosphere for our guests.
  • “Going Green” has consistently been one of the Center’s main operating objectives, earning the facility inclusion as a founding member of the Convene Green Alliance.
  • The facility has successfully reduced energy consumption every year since the building opened in 1997.
  • It is the goal of Spectra, as good stewards of the venue, to implement sound, efficient, cost-saving programs that contribute to a sustainable environment.
  • Energy Efficiency: Due to past efforts by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA), the Atlantic City Convention Center installed the largest single roof mounted solar array in the United States on top of the facility in 2009.  The solar roof consists of 13,000 individual panels and covers over 290,000 square feet. To date, it has produced 29% of the building’s total electrical consumption, most recently accounting for 31% in 2017.
  • The Atlantic City Convention Center anticipates savings of nearly $4.4 million in electricity costs since its debut through 2029.
  • Sustainability Efforts: The Spectra team has invested in large cages on wheels that enable the exhibitors and decorators alike to recycle with ease. Since the cages are see through and labeled appropriately as “cardboard,” “vinyl,” “clear plastic” or “styrofoam,” they make it very convenient for all to recognize the correct placement for their waste.
  • Atrium Ceiling Fans estimated to produce $80,000
  • Solar Photovoltaic Panels produce 28% of annual electrical consumption and produced 2,764,235 kwh.
  • Food Service: Green seal approved chemicals, energy star equipment, local sustainable produce
  • Recycling efforts in 2019:
    • Paper, Cardboard: 26,229 lbs.
    • Glass, Plastic, Aluminum Bottles, Cans, Shrink Wrap: 6.25 tons
    • Lamps: 16.50 lbs.
    • Carpet: 4,500 lbs.
    • Miscellaneous: 69,598 lbs.
