First Boardwalk opens in Atlantic City

Chicken Bone Beach was established

The golf term “Birdie” was created at Atlantic City Country Club

Sarah Spencer Washington started a hairdressing business in Atlantic City later became a millionaire black businesswoman who founded the Apex News & Hair Company

1919
The name “airport” was coined in Atlantic City to designate its airfield, Edward L. Bader Field

1920
Diving Horse act was introduced to the Steel Pier
Enoch L. "Nucky" Johnson started operations 

1921
First Miss America, Margaret Gorman, was crowned 

1935
Monopoly the board game based on Atlantic City was created 

1950
Art Dorrington became the first African American hockey player

1964
Democratic National Convention was held at Boardwalk Hall

1978
The first casino, Resorts International, opens

1984
City’s first African American mayor, James L. Usry, elected
